Roundabout Theatre Company begins a 20-week North American tour producing Charles Fuller’s “A Soldier’s Play”.

Tony Award-winner Kenny Lyon is returning to direct the show. It won the 2020 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. Tony Award nominee Norm Lewis will play Captain Richard Davenport. The tour will begin in December 2022. The full cast and schedule will be announced.

Set on a U.S. Army base in the South in 1944, the story follows an officer in a race against white leadership. He has to solve the murder of a black sergeant. Fuller won a Pulitzer Prize in 1982, but the 2020 roundabout revival is his Broadway debut.

Norm Lewis

Lewis was last seen on Broadway in the season of Douglas Lyon’s Chicken and Crackers. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his lead role in the 2012 Gershwin House production of Porgy and Bess. His Broadway credits also include Once On This Island. Also, The Little Mermaid, and The Wild Party. And, of course, The Phantom of the Opera. Ther he made history as the first black actor to play The Phantom on Broadway.

Lewis’ TV and film roles include “Scandal,” “Pose,” “Central Park,” “Da 5 Bloods” and “Christmas in Tune.” The Broadway creative team is also returning to tour production: set design by Derek McLane, costume design by Dede Ayite, lighting design by Allen Lee Hughes, and sound design by Dan Moses Schreier. A Soldier’s Play tour is produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company and Tamar Climan.
