Byrne said: “I am very happy. After more than a year, I can finally announce that our show will return to Broadway. You who stick to your faith, hold on to your votes, well, you know this will happen eventually!
The Big Return
Previews begin September 17. We are moving to the St. James Theatre – just 44th Street on Hudson Street where we were before. The stage is wider and the capacity is bigger. I think we are doing well! Seriously, New York is back again. Given everything we have seen, felt, and experienced, it is obvious to me that no one wants to return to a world where everything is like this—we have the opportunity to enter a new world here. See you then and there!”
The initial operation started on October 20, 2019, and will continue until 2020. Production recovered its initial investment of USD 4 million in mid-December 10 weeks after opening. Oscar-winner Spike Lee filmed this theatrical concert at the end of a Broadway show; it premiered on HBO on October 17, 2020.
Under the guidance of production consultant Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!), the lighting design of the show was designed by Rob Sinclair, Pete Keppler as sound design, and Karl Mansfield and Mauro Refosco as music director. Annie-B Parson provided choreography and musical performances. With the development of public health conditions and guidance, American Utopia will always follow the latest guidelines to ensure the safety of all musicians, production staff, theater staff, and audiences.
