David Byrne’s “American Utopia” will return to Broadway on September 17th at the St. James Theatre. Recently, another music headline figure, Bruce Springsteen, made a limited return.

This critically acclaimed work will receive a special Tony Award at the Tony Award Ceremony on September 26. Byrne joined the comeback band members Jacqueline Acevedo, Gustavo Di Dalva, Daniel Freedman, Chris Giarmo, Tim Keiper, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Mauro Refosco, Stéphane San Juan, Angie Swan, and Bobby Wooten III.

A new beginning

Byrne said in an earlier statement: “It’s great that after more than a year, I can finally announce that our show will return to Broadway. You who hold on to your faith. Hold on to your votes, um, you know this is the ultimate It will happen! September 17th-The reinstallation preview begins. We are moving to the St. James Theatre-just off 44th Hudson Street where we were before. The stage is wider and the capacity is bigger. Seriously, New York is back. And considering everything we have seen, felt, and experienced, it’s obvious to me that no one wants to return to a world. A world where everything is like this-we has a chance to enter here A new world. See you there then.”

Movie version

Oscar-winner Spike Lee filmed this theatrical concert at the end of a Broadway show; it premiered on HBO on October 17, 2020. This film has recently won two Creative Arts Emmy Awards. One for lighting design/lighting guidance for variety shows. And mixing for variety series or special programs. It was also nominated as an outstanding variety show (pre-recorded) for the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony to be held on September 19. Under the direction of production consultant Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!), the lighting design of the show was designed by Rob Sinclair, Pete Keppler as sound design, and Karl Mansfield and Mauro Refosco as music director. Annie-B Parson provides choreography and music performances.

The Broadway run

The initial run started on October 20, 2019, and will continue until 2020. Production recovered its initial investment of USD 4 million in mid-December 10 weeks after opening. David Byrne’s American Utopia is produced by Christine Kaski, Mike Isaacson, Patrick Catullo, and Todomdo, Hal Luftiger, Jonathan Renis, Sheila F Redman, Annapurna Theater, Elizabeth Armstrong, Thomas Raub, Steven Rosenthal, Erica Lynn Schwartz, Matt Piccheny, Steve Traxler, Ryan Blavatnik, Nonesuch Records, Warner Chappell Music, and Ambassador Theatre Group Productions. Alan Williams serves as executive producer.
