The pre – Broadway engagement of a new musical based on KPOP music will be held later this year. This new musical, called KPOP for short, is part of the upcoming season of the Signature Theatre in Washington, DC. KPOP will be broadcast on Broadway from December 2021 to January 2022. It was inspired by the rapid rise of Korean pop music bands including BTS and Blackpink. The show follows a music group when they put everything in concerts. However, the struggle of a singer may ruin their chances of fame and their future relationship with the music label.

KPOP on Broadway?

KPOP on Broadway features a book by Jason Kim, music, and lyrics by Helen Park and Max Vernon. Directed by Teddy Bergman, choreographed by Jennifer Webb. A complete creative team and cast will be announced. A public casting call was made public in April 2020. KPOP premiered in Ars Nova, New York in 2017, and its world premiere has won three Lucille Lortel Awards including outstanding musical. KPOP actors include Ashley Park as MwE and Jason Tam as Epic. The upcoming KPOP show in Washington, D.C. is a show before Broadway. The exact date is yet to be confirmed. More details about the future of Broadway KPOP will be announced.

“Discovering new talent should be the top priority of every working Asian American artist. By opening the door to our casting process, our goal is to create a new generation of talent that will allow people who often can’t make it to the stage. We know you are outside! Please go through our (virtual) door,” shared co-creator Kim.

Casting

KPOP: The global virtual casting event for Broadway musicals was launched online in April. The producers of this new musical, scheduled to be screened on Broadway in 2021, are looking for Asian performers in their 20s. Those interested in auditioning should visit kpopbroadway.com/casting and submit a video of themselves singing contemporary K-pop (or popular) songs; dance reels, dance performance clips, or short films showing their dance ability; and a copy of their resume or a copy of it A brief description of singing, dancing, acting, and performance experience. According to producers Tim Forbes and Joey Parnes, KPOP: The Broadway Musical is scheduled to premiere on Broadway next year, but the theater and date have not yet been announced.

An early version of the musical referred to as KPOP for short, played a critically acclaimed, sold-out off-Broadway show in works by Ars Nova, Ma-Yi Theatre, and Woodshed Collective in 2017. This immersive work, which won the 2018 Lucille Lortel Outstanding Musical Award, took the audience backstage of a K-pop music factory and was staged in a number of different spaces in the A.R.T./New York Theater.
