The gender-swapped Company

A few years ago, composer Stephen Sondheim invited director Marianne Elliott to dinner. At that dinner, Eliot proposed to Sondheim her thoughts on his musical “The Company”. What if Bobby, who is usually played by men, is played by women? “I don’t think he really thinks this is a good idea,” commented Eliot, the three-time Tony Award winner.

“So I said to him, ‘well, why don’t you let me make a workshop?” After Sondheim saw it, he called Elliott and blessed her. Elliott’s reimagined Company operated in the West End in 2018 and was widely acclaimed. It won the Olivier Best Revival Award. The show will now be staged on Broadway. With previews starting on November 15th and opening night on December 9th.

Company follows a bachelor named Bobby. He is surrounded by married friends who are urging him to get married. Robert is now a single girl named Bobby, played by Tony Award winner Katrina Lenk in Elliott’s version.
