A stage adaptation of the popular children’s book Harold and the Purple Crayon is in the works and is targeting Broadway! The production will feature original songs written by Jack and Ryan Met of popular indie band AJR. Tony Award-winning producer Vivek J. Tiwary also worked on the project.

The rest of the creative team, including the book’s author and director, has not been announced. “We grew up admiring Harold and The Purple Crayon and thought if we saw Harold as a young adult and realized his problems were too deep to get out of it,” AJR said in a statement. “Vivek The incredible musical composition and passion for the idea make him the perfect partner in reinterpreting a classic story.”

AJR is an American indie pop trio consisting of the multi-instrumentalists brothers Adam, Jack, and Ryan Mette. Her most successful songs include “I’m Ready”, “Sober Up”, “Burn the House Down”, “Way Less Sad”, “100 Bad Days”, “Weak” and “Bang!”. In 2019, their third album Neotheatre peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums chart. “Bang!” was her top chart-topping song and the only song to make it to the top 10, at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 22, 2021.

The name “AJR” comes from the initials of three brothers Adam, Jack, and Ryan. The band writes, produces, and mixes their music in the living room of their New York City apartment. Her musical style has been described as “eclectic”, incorporating elements of pop, doo-wop, electronic, and dubstep.
