Obviously, Peters’ strange career hides a secret, and Pennell is also deeply involved. The Pitch made its world premiere in 2020 at the Majestic Theatre in West Springfield, Massachusetts. It will now be performed on Broadway at the Jerry Orbach Theater. It which is currently showing The Office: A Musical Parody! Until September 19th.

Cast

The cast includes John Haag as Pennell, Julian Findlay as the young sportswriter Mike Resnick, Jack Press as Peters, Kelly Strandemo as Pauline, and Dennis Lee as the voice of the baseball announcer. Danny Eaton will direct.

The rest of the creative team includes set designer Greg Trochlil, lighting designer Matthew Sells, and costume designer Dawn McKay.

Vernon Peters

In 1973, Vernon Peters made only one ball in the New York Yankees’ major leagues and soon left the baseball world. His life gradually fell into despair – alcoholism, divorce, homelessness. He eventually died anonymously.

In this interesting and unforgettable story, a cynical, down-to-earth retired sportswriter reluctantly agrees to work with a young one who is eager to write a paperback biography for Peters. But it will soon be discovered that at the core of the pitcher’s mysterious and tragic story lies a secret—a secret that an older writer tried to hide. The unexpected ending of the show will leave you stunned. Although set in baseball, “THE PITCH” by Stan Freeman is not so much about sports as it is about dreams, life choices, and generational differences.
