The Tony Award-winning Chicago and the Broadway League, which reopened on September 14th, joined forces to present Viva Broadway! Parts of the long-term production now starring Ana Villafañe, Bianca Marroquín, and Paulo Szot will be presented in Spanish.
Viva Broadway
An evening celebrating Hispanic and Latino theater producers and audiences at the Ambassador Theatre on October 18th. Part of the long-term show celebrating its 25th anniversary on Broadway that evening will be performed in Spanish. The company is currently led by three Latin heroines: Ana Villafañe as Roxie Hart, Bianca Marroquín as Velma Kelly, and Tony Award winner Paulo Szot as Billy Flynn. ¡ Long live Broadway! It is an audience development program of the Broadway League.
Its long-term goal is to celebrate Latino talents and increase awareness and participation in Broadway. Marroquín and Gloria Estefan served as the ambassador for the project; Luis Miranda served as the chairman of the advisory board.
Chicago
The revival of Chicago began as one of the triennial Encore! The presentation was provided by City Center. The musical opened at the Richard Rogers Theater on Broadway in November 1996 and lasted until February 1997. The Schubert Theater was the next home of the show. It performed in the theater until January 26, 2003. Renaissance reopened at the Ambassador Theatre on January 29 of that year. It is now the second-longest performance in Broadway history (after “The Phantom of the Opera”).
With a book by the late Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Ebb, Chicago features the direction of Walter Bobbie, choreography by the late Ann Reinking, set design by John Lee Beatty, William Ivey Long costume design, lighting design Ken Billington, Scott Lehrer sound design, Stewart/Whitley Casting.
Viva Broadway, 2020
A company with more than 100 Latin artists,¡ Viva Broadway! “Listen to Our Voice” caused a sensation when it premiered on October 1. For Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Bridges concerts, a total of US$189,598 was raised. These funds will provide groceries, life-saving drugs, emergency COVID-19 assistance, etc. to families in need through Broadway Cares, and also support the affiliated organization, R. Evolución Latina. R.Evolución Latina was founded by Luis Salgado, Viva’s associate director, and co-choreographer, “to promote individual and collective human growth, transformation and social change through artistic experience”, especially in contact with the Latino community.
The Broadway Bridges funding will help New York City public school students watch Broadway shows before graduation, cultivate future theater audiences and inspire tomorrow’s creators.
